The 2018-19 budget yesterday revealed a $52 million spend on the Future Frigate program in the coming financial year to replace Australia’s existing fleet of eight Anzac-class frigates with nine new anti-submarine warfare ship. Italian shipping giant Fincantieri engaged MG Engineering to build two ship blocks that will be used to for a cruise ship they are building in Vietnam. Each block weighs 22.3 tonne and is just under the size of a tennis court. Fincantieri is bidding for the $35 billion SEA 5000 Future Frigate Program and committed to the local block build which will use 50 tonnes of Australian steel, as a part of its engagement to local suppliers.
$2.5 million expansion of workshop and slipway
MG Engineering is planning a $2.5 million expansion of it’s workshop and slipway at Gillman, taking on another 64 workers to triple it’s workforce.
